Steve Irwin has been a popular name because of his devotion for
the wild life. He has been known as “The Crocodile Hunter” primarily because of
his famous stunts together with his beloved crocodiles. It is an undeniable that
a lot of people looked up to him when he was still alive. That’s why during his
untimely death, there are a lot of people who experienced great sadness. His
life as a famous environmentalist caused a lot of people to admire him and some
despise him. But still, for his beloved, especially for his daughter, Bindi, he
will always be a hero.
This testimonial of Bindi happened last September 20, 2006. She bravely stood
there in front of the crowd to deliver a heart-warming speech for her lost
father. For a small girl like her, it would’ve took a lot of courage to be able
to utter these words in front of about five thousand people, not to mention the
people who are at home watching in their television screen.
Bindi's eulogy
My Daddy was my
hero – he was always there for me when I needed him. He listened to me and
taught me so many things, but most of all he was fun.
I know that Daddy had an important job. He was working to change the world so
everyone would love wildlife like he did. He built a hospital to help animals
and he bought lots of land to give animals a safe place to live.
He took me and my brother and my Mum with him all the time.
We filmed together, caught crocodiles together and loved being in the bush
together.
I don't want Daddy's passion to ever end. I want to help endangered wildlife
just like he did.
I have the best Daddy in the whole world and I will miss him every day. When I
see a crocodile I will always think of him and I know that Daddy made this zoo
so everyone could come and learn to love all the animals. Daddy made this place
his whole life and now it's our turn to help Daddy.
As the little girl delivered her piece, attendees and viewers
could not help but cry. The crowd were so moved with the speech that they
recognized it with a standing ovation. Despite the short length of the eulogy,
this piece could be considered as a perfect eulogy. The words were from the
heart and all it contained was a child’s pure love for her father. If we would
look into the speech, there was nothing special about it. It just contained the
simple account of the child on how she spent her day with her father while he
was alive and how she would miss him now that he is gone. But what makes it
different from other speeches is that this 182-word speech was delivered with
pure respect for his father, love and sadness. It does not contain lavish words
but the simple words were more than enough to make a great impact on the
listeners.
The huge appeal that this eulogy created on the audience did not stop with the
standing ovation. It was even chosen as the television moment of the year in the
Australia TV Week Reader Poll 2006. This short eulogy was able to garner 43 per
cent of the votes from the poll.
It is just a proof that in order to give out the best eulogy, the amount of
words is not important. All that matters is that the words came from the heart
and you say it with all honesty. Bindi taught us that to be able to reach out in
the crowd during eulogy, you need to be sincere and every word that you utter
should come from the heart. You need not be a professional to be able to conduct
such a piece to perfection. Like in Bindi’s case, this outstanding eulogy was
solely created by this eight year old child. This fact came from her mother,
Terri. Her mother even stated that all she did was to help Bindi type. Truly,
this eulogy is a piece that could be considered as a final gift given to her
dad.
